Ian Rubin is the current CEO and main shareholder of Lafayette Inc, a large conglomerate holding company based in Magnolia Bend, Louisiana. Originally from Lafayette, he has made a number of strategic investments and business deals which have netted him an estimated net worth of US$107 billion, making him the undisputed richest person on the planet. As running the vast economic empire at his disposal is rather stressful (a fact which is only worsened by the frequent odd nights in the Tavern itself), he chooses to relax at the Tavern... to varying degrees of success.
Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, Ian was the son of parents who made a rather successful living as owners of an oil company. While originally intending to pursue his father's career, he instead fell in love with the world of aviation and aerospace in general. After graduating from high school in 1998, he moved north to attend college at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, mastering in aviation and minoring in business. Upon his graduation, he received start up money and investments upon which to found several corporations in Louisiana along a lake in the Atchafalaya Basin known as Lake Paradise, and managed to build the firms up to their current states in a very short amount of time.
While he doesn't often describe how he and his wife Fractal met, he makes no secret of the fact that she is an alien. ("Not the illegal kind, either.") However, most of the details of his relationship, his ownership of the base at Groom Lake known as Area 51, and his ownership of an airstrip in northern Canada remain shrouded in secrecy.
Ian's time in the Tavern has been filled with a number of colorful and difficult situations, most of which have been associated with Shimmari, and by extension, Cassandra, although he views the latter with a slightly better light than the former. A few incidents involving Jesse Tavish, including one which resulted in the vandalism of his Jeep Rescue, have also added to tensions between Ian and the other patrons. Recently, however, he's toned down his temper to some extent, and generally tries to cope with the situations around him in the Tavern, often with unexpected results.
Over time, though, he and other patrons of the Tavern have had an occasional fling, although he remains firmly committed to his marriage. His relationship is best described as 'open', however he states that, "My wife and I can have our fun, but at the end of the night, nothing will change the fact that we're married and in love." This fact, however, has gotten him into the occasional difficult situation.
To the chagrin of a fair number of patrons, he does try to work on occasion in the Tavern, and many are often frustrated by the fact he is more than eager to share details of new aircraft, companies or other portions of his work related life. He's attempted to remedy the situation... but usually fails in the end despite his efforts to avoid doing so.
